Keynote Presentation Details:

Most theories of leadership focus on "the leader" and the personal characteristics most often associated with great leaders. Effects Based Analysis focuses rather on the practical result of the leader's behavior. In building and leading an organization, what is the one practical effect that every successful leader must achieve, regardless of his/her personality, looks, or resume?

Poythress David

David Poythress is President and CEO of the Poythress Group, a management consulting firm based in Atlanta, and he speaks publicly on the subject of leadership and organizational dynamics.

He earned his law degree, with honors, from Emory University and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. David served four years on active duty, including one year as defense counsel and Chief of Military Justice at DaNang Air Base, in the Republic of Vietnam.

Upon returning to civilian life, David held several positions in Georgia state government, including Deputy State Revenue Commissioner, where he oversaw a complete reorganization of the Department of Revenue. As Secretary of State from 1979 to 1983, he reorganized and modernized that office as well, and guided the Georgia elections process through the turbulent re-districting litigation of 1982.

David practiced law in Atlanta, with concentrations in taxation and public finance. In 1992, he resigned his law practice and ran successfully for the office of State Labor Commissioner, and he was re-elected in 1994. As Labor Commissioner, David brought financial accountability to publicly funded job training programs and secured the first major payroll tax cut in Georgia history.

In 1998, David resigned as State Labor Commissioner and as a Brigadier General in the Air Force Reserve and ran unsuccessfully for the office of Governor of Georgia. In 1999, David was appointed Adjutant General in the rank of Major General. He retired from the National Guard in 2007 in the rank of Lieutenant General - the first Adjutant General in Georgia history to hold that rank.

General Poythress was responsible for the training and deployment of Georgia Guardsmen to combat operations in Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and he oversaw Georgia’s response to Hurricane Katrina. In his responsibility for security at the Global Eight (G8) Summit at Sea Island, General Poythress secured an amendment to federal law authorizing a novel command structure, which is now used at all Special National Security events, such as the Super Bowl and national political party conventions. During his tenure, the Georgia Guard was awarded the prestigious Georgia Oglethorpe Award – the Malcolm Baldrige Award equivalent – for organizational and leadership excellence.

General Poythress has held several local and national leadership positions. He was Vice Chairman of the Board of the National Guard Association of the United States, and is a member of the Board of Directors of Jobs for America's Graduates. He served two terms as Chairman of the Board of the State YMCA of Georgia. He is a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the USO.

The General and his wife Elizabeth are members of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. They have three grown children, and eight grandchildren.
