1.     Basic Membership Information:

Thank you for your interest in PMI.  If you are interested in Project Management, PMI is a great place to be!   Following links are a good introduction to membership in PMI, the global organization, and also in the PMI Chapter

[Following is PMI Global]

http://www.pmi.org/Membership.aspx

In addition to joining the global organization, we highly recommend you consider joining PMI’s local chapter, PMI Atlanta.

http://www.pmiatlanta.org/

Following are membership benefits in PMI Atlanta

http://www.pmiatlanta.org/membership/benefits-of-membership

We have newcomer meetings every other month before the monthly dinner meeting.  Attendance is free.  Also, feel free to reach out and contact me at membership@pmiatlanta.org if you would like to discuss your specific interests.

2. How To Join PMI?

To get the best benefit from your membership in PMI, we recommend you become a member of the PMI Atlanta chapter, in addition to pmi.org.  This will give you opportunities to attend networking and education events at a reduced price.  To do this, you will need to place an order for both a PMI membership and a PMI Atlanta Chapter membership on the pmi.org website.

Directions:

1.     Go to the following site:

http://www.pmi.org/Membership/Membership-Types-of-Memberships.aspx

2.     Determine if you are a regular or student member, and select the appropriate JOIN link

3.     Select "Add to Cart" to add the PMI membership fee.  This should put you on a screen that shows your cart.

4.     Under the "Marketplace" tab on the left, select "Community Membership" then "Chapters"

Or click following link

http://www.pmi.org/Get-Involved/Chapters-PMI-Chapters.aspx

5.     From here, select “United States”, “Georgia

6.     You will see a list of chapters.  Under “Atlanta”, select the “JOIN” button.

7.     This takes you back to the “Marketplace” screen

8.     Add “Atlanta Chapter” to your Cart, verify, and then “Check Out” at the bottom of the screen.

9.     Pay for your orders and you are done.

3. What does chapter membership Cost?

Cost is $10 for a one time application fee, then $159 per year:  $129 for PMI Membership, and $30 for Chapter Membership.  For more information, see following link:

http://www.pmi.org/Membership.aspx

http://www.pmi.org/en/Membership/Membership-Types-of-Memberships.aspx

Total Cost:

Regular  $10 application +$129+$30=$159

Student  $10 application + $ 32+$10=$  42

Retiree - $65 to renew plus $30 for chapter $65+$30=$95

4.     Group Billing Plan

Save money on application fees through the group billing plan.

When an employer has 15 or more employees join PMI and at least one chapter, and the employer handles the PMI membership costs, they can save money and consolidate paperwork through our group billing plan — a group-invoice program for employees of the same organization.

http://www.pmi.org/Membership/Membership-Group-Billing-Plan.aspx

5.     Hardship Program

Hardship Provision is available to any PMI member whose financial condition has changed drastically and sufficiently so that a member would have difficulty renewing their membership.  A member must be in good standing for at least three consecutive years to qualify for the hardship provision.  Under the provision, a member is granted a waiver for one year of PMI Membership dues and one year of dues for membership in any two PMI Components of which the applicant was a member the previous year.  The Hardship provision may be granted for a maximum of two years for each member.

To apply for consideration, send a signed letter explaining the nature of the hardship, along with the membership renewal invoice, to the attention of the Manager, Member Services prior to the membership expiration date.  Please remember that any incorrect or untrue statements made by a member are in violation of the Project Management Institute Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and may lead to the initiation of an ethic complaint in accordance with the PMI Ethics Case Procedures.

You may send your request mail to:

7.     How to get involved

Welcome to the chapter!  I think the best way to get involved is to attend the meetings or events, and talk to the volunteers that attend.  For example at the monthly dinner meeting there is usually a Professional Growth event, and there is a table for Membership and Volunteers. 17.           What certifications are available?

The common certification is PMP, or Project Management Professional.  It requires approximately three years of experience, (4500 hours), and 35 hours of education and requires passing a test.

There is also an Agile Certification called PMI-ACP  or PMI Agile Certified Practitioner, which requires 2,000 hours of general project management experience (Active PMP® or PgMP® will satisfy this requirement), 1500 hours working on agile project teams or with agile methodologies, and 21 contact hours of training in Agile Practices.

Another certification is the CAPM, or Certified Associate in Project Management.  It is an entry-level certification for project practitioners, and is designed for the entry level project manager.  It requires at least 1,500 hours experience OR 23 hours of project management education, and requires you pass a test.  That might be a good one for you to look at, if you don’t have a lot of experience.

For more information see:

http://www.pmi.org/Certification.aspx

19.           If I join PMI, is there a discount when taking a PMI Certification exam?

Yes, PMI members receive a discount for certification exams. The PMI membership rate will apply only if you are a member of PMI in good standing at the time you submit payment for the credential. If you apply for membership right before you apply for the credential, make sure you receive confirmation of your membership before you pay for the credential. If your membership has not been completely processed before you pay for the credential, you will be charged the nonmember rate.

If PMI membership is obtained after you submit payment for the credential, PMI will not refund the difference. For a list of the discounts refer to page 13 of the Project Management Handbook at http://www.pmi.org/en/Certification/~/media/PDF/Certifications/pdc_pmphandbook.ashx . There is no discount for being a PMI Atlanta Chapter member for PMI Certification Exams.

If you are enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) in a degree-granting program at a college or university that has U.S. accreditation, or the global equivalent, a PMI student membership may be right for you.
