Description:
This course covers Lean and Six Sigma best practices as applied to product (i.e. deliverables), process and project quality management. Participants learn to apply these powerful concepts to achieve a competitive edge, improved service, greater customer satisfaction, significant cost savings, enhanced profitability, and sustained performance improvement. According to PMI, quality is one of the six competing constraints faced by every project and program manager. All topics covered are consistent with the Fifth Edition of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and the Third Edition of The Standard for Program Management. This course was prepared by a PMI approved Registered Education Provider and is an integral part of the curriculum in the Project Management Certificate program at the University of South Florida. Included in the course materials are self-directed learning activities that qualify for additional PDUs, in addition to those earned by attending this course. All course materials are included at no additional charge.
Course objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Describe the difference between Lean and Six Sigma on a job interview
• Understand and distinguish between the various types of muda (i.e. waste)
• Explain why both effectiveness and efficiency are needed
• Construct a SIPOC, fishbone diagram and Pareto chart
• Participant in a Kaizen (continuous improvement) and 5S events
• Differentiate between a process map and network diagram
• Conduct root cause analysis by asking five whys as part of DMAIC problem solving
• Use an affinity diagram for project management applications
• Develop alternative and value added solutions via data based decision making

This course is ideal for project/program managers, business/systems analysts, project team members, project and process stakeholders, quality professionals, technical specialists, and operations/functional managers. The best practices covered are applicable to anyone wanting to improve project management and/or organizational processes, along with the deliverables they provide. Instructor Bio.
Michael Trimble began his executive management career as a Program Manager at TRW. While working for this Fortune 200 industry leader, he led the only team in his division to earn the TRW Champion’s Award for outstanding leadership and team-based performance excellence. Mike attributes this accomplishment to the successful application of Lean Six Sigma best practices. Serving as a Program Manager gave him the skills and experience to advance his career to ever more demanding roles such as PMO Leader, Division Head, Vice President and General Manager, and President/CEO. He is a Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), and Lead Instructor in both PMP Exam Preparation and Federal Acquisitions Certification for Program and Project Managers (FAC P/PM). Mike has over 10 years of profit and loss experience leading strategic business units through high growth, performance optimization, organizational development, continuous improvement, and enhanced profitability. This includes successfully planning and executing enterprise-wide business initiatives, strategic project portfolios, programs supporting federal regulations valued in excess of a hundred million dollars, and complex cross-functional projects.
