Why would anyone say, “failure is not an option,” when in truth it always is. Individuals and organizations across the globe experience this unhappy truth every day despite their best intentions. Yet even as we learn to accept our own failures, sometimes, we don’t recognize important insights and truths they contain. Today’s presentation, Lessons from a Rooftop; Daring to Fail Greatly, is about overcoming fear of failure as experienced through the telling of an inspirational and humorous story that provides a well-defined set of lessons that are applicable in any arena. Fear of failure is without doubt, what holds most of us back from achieving our full potential. It is through failures that we are able to learn, grow and ultimately succeed. If you’re making mistakes and learning from them, you’re actually on the path to success. The message is clear. Get out there and fail but make it about learning; it’s the only way to get exceptionally good at anything.
Bill Kay is PMI Atlanta’s Vice President of Operations. Bill graduated with honors from Regis University’s College of Professional Studies, Denver, Colorado, with a Master of Science Degree. Bill’s decision to pursue his graduate credentials in three related and essential business areas: Organization Leadership, Project Management, and Strategic Business Management ultimately led him to PMI’s doorstep. He joined PMI in 2007 and PMP certified upon completing his graduate studies. Following some local chapter involvement, Bill served 2-years as a global evaluator for PMI’s Professional Awards Program, the David I. Cleland Project Management Literature Award. Here he applied project management expertise to analyze literature published in the previous year, to recognize and honor the (single) publication that most significantly advances project management knowledge, concepts and practice.
PMI Knowledge Shelf shortly thereafter published a peer-reviewed technical article authored by Bill. “Six Questions on the Path to Financially Justified Projects: Developing Cash Flow Models” examines and succinctly summarizes information and knowledge project managers require to produce cash flow models that are taken seriously and support the organization’s project selection process.
Bill has been an effective catalyst driving transformational change across his complementary executive leadership roles overseeing operations, sales and project management. Recent career positions include, Senior Manager US Sales Operations for a global consultancy, VP of Operations for an education consultancy, and VP for Enrollment Management for an online university. His earlier experience spans several industries: wireless, telecom, logistics, technology, consulting and outsourcing.
Bill’s reason for active involvement in chapter activities is simple; “This is where you have the opportunity to associate yourself with the best and brightest people in the industry. People emotionally committed, who know their contribution will make a difference and have a positive effect on others.”
