Agile Forum - 230516

"Agile & Cybersecurity" presented by Andrew Gurbaxani, vCIO at Assessivate LLC

The Agile Forum is meeting in-person this month! Our meetings offer an opportunity for professional networking and knowledge sharing with other agile practitioners as well as provide a learning environment for professionals interested in learning about agile techniques. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Presentation

In the IT world, there are few subjects with more buzz and importance than agile and cybersecurity. Agile techniques have transformed how we work, and cybersecurity has enabled dramatic changes in where we work. Both subjects have deep ties to the software development world, which pioneered the use of agile, and fostered the technologies behind cybersecurity, cryptography, wireless, web design, etc. We can see how these subjects separately influence our world and how we manage projects in it. However, what is the intersection, or better said, interaction between the two?

We will come at this subject through two different ways:

  1. How have agile methodologies influenced the delivery of cybersecurity services such as simulated phishing, penetration testing, ethical hacking, incident response, etc.
  2. How has the widespread adoption of agile working methods and processes posed a unique, unprecedented risk (and opportunity) to the enterprise from a cybersecurity operations and compliance perspective.

As project managers become more involved in agile processes (e.g., sprints, continuous integration and continuous delivery/continuous deployment), they will need to add cybersecurity-related risk to their project risk logs. As they work on cybersecurity-related efforts (e.g., SOC 2 Compliance), they will benefit from agile techniques to make the projects more efficient. Also, with advances in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (e.g., ChatGPT), we expect the overlap between agile and cybersecurity processes to only increase in time.

Presentation Outline:

  • Agile and Cybersecurity (overview)
  • The Use of Agile Techniques in Cybersecurity Operations
  • Unique Challenges that Agile Processes Present from a Cybersecurity Perspective
  • Summary and Conclusions
  • Q&A

Biography Gurbaxani-Andrew

Andrew Gurbaxani (CISSP, PMP, PMI-ACP, CSPO) has spent the last decade as an executive in charge of the IT function (CIO, CTO) for companies in highly regulated industries. At Benevis (healthcare), he was responsible for the rollout of a "compliance template" to help measure and monitor the company's overall HIPAA compliance, as well as the acquisition and deployment of cybersecurity systems and services. At Vensure and Fiserv (financial services), he led the former through its first successful SOC 2 certification and expanded the cybersecurity function to allow both international and third-party users secure access to systems. At the latter, he was responsible for governance activities around large bank consolidations and compliance audits. He is a member of PMI Atlanta, three cybersecurity industry organizations (i.e., ISC2, ISACA, and ISSA), and sits on the Board of Advisors for the Computer Information Systems (CIS) of Gwinnett Technical College, where he mentors future IT/cybersecurity professionals.
