Biography

Burst-Terranella-Fran

Fran Burst-Terranella is an independent film and television Director and Producer. Her award-winning work spans 4 decades and totals more than 700 productions – from documentaries, branded entertainment, TV spots, PSAs, and corporate shorts, to motivational and grant award films helping non-profits secure over $1 billion in funding.

Fran’s documentaries have aired nationally on ABC, TBS and PBS and her work has earned over 125 honors - Tellys, CINE Golden Eagles and festivals from New York, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta and Los Angeles, to Australia, England, Scotland, Spain and Canada.

A multi-faceted Director, Fran builds rapport with everyone in front of her camera. She directed her first short film in 1968, became the first woman to graduate as a Director in the University of Texas’ graduate film school and premiered her first feature film “The 12 Lives of Sissy Carlyle" at this year’s Atlanta Film Festival. www.sissycarlylemovie.com

In this darkly comic SAG-Indie drama, Sissy Carlyle – a shy writer - creates fantastic, sometimes absurd, always exciting alternative lives for herself in secret journals.  A chance encounter with a charming artist leads Sissy to a crossroad – will she stay safely ensconced in her fantasy lives or will she venture out and discover what her real life might become?

A creative entrepreneur, new grandmom, zealous environmental filmmaker, and spirited Georgia industry leader and mentor, Fran served as senior faculty at the Art Institute of Atlanta 2001-2014 and as co-president of Georgia Production Partnership, 2006-2009 as Georgia’s entertainment tax incentive was developed and passed.

Fran lives her belief,  “Women and men tell stories differently. As more women take the Director’s chair, the deeper, richer, and more compelling our cinema becomes.”
