Four Essential PM Skills You Won't Learn from the PMBOK® Guide - 2018901

Wednesday, March 28, 2018 - Thursday, March 29, 2018
8:00am - 5:00pm

Description:

This course will cover four half-day topics:

Managing Project Issues – Issues are major problems that require outside help to resolve. Issues can potentially doom a project. Therefore identifying and managing issues are critical success factors. Project managers may come in contact with issues as part of their management routine; however effectively managing them is far from a routine activity. An unresolved issue could directly impact cost, scope and time and the development and execution of an issue management plan is the project manager’s best weapon. This part of the class focuses on determining if a situation or problem is a true issue and, if so, helps determine the most effective way to manage it. Students will create a practical issue management plan, evaluate the impact of issues, and use tools and techniques for determining viable resolution options.

Organization and Project Leadership Skills - There are many characteristics and traits of a good leader that are difficult to define. Most are skills that are developed over time but how can someone achieve them? This portion of the class will explore the qualities of leadership and provide a better understanding of how to develop these skills. It will also demonstrate specific areas that require focus and the different roles and behaviors a leader must have to be successful. As a result, each student can build an action plan, based on their own style, to become a good leader.

Negotiating for Success – Negotiating is a critical business skill in establishing agreements between parties. This section of the course teaches the fundamentals for successful negotiation including establishing requirements, tactics to utilize, and influencing negotiations. It also covers the guidelines for conducting a successful negotiation and facilitating communication. Students will also learn how to gain control in a negotiation, use various negotiation tactics, and deal with unethical negotiation tactics.

Recovering Troubled Projects - When is the last time you worked on a project that was planned and executed perfectly and where you met expectations in terms of budget, deadline and product quality? Although no project is absolutely perfect, most projects are probably completed with an “acceptable” amount of problems and stress. Of course, there are other projects that meet the criteria of “troubled”. These projects have significant problems in meeting their deadline, budget or deliverables – perhaps all three. The purpose of this topic is to help determine whether a project is “troubled” and if so, to lay out a process to turn the project around. A troubled project is too far gone to meet the original expectations. However, this part of the class will show you processes and techniques designed to reset expectations and then to successfully deliver the project to meet the revised commitments
