Healthcare Forum - 180919

"Population Health and U.S. Healthcare System: Opportunities for Project Management Applications" Presented by Dr. Imoh Okon, Georgia State University Assistant Professor,  Clinical Research, PhD. MSc, MPH (c), PMP

The PMI Atlanta Healthcare Forum has 9 planned sessions throughout 2018. Proposed topics include IT & IT PMO in Healthcare, Healthcare SME/Domain Forums such as Clinical, Laboratory, Research, Tomorrow's Healthcare & Government practices/law, Thought Leadership in Healthcare, and Innovation in Healthcare Technology.

Presentation

Traditional project management (PM) applications predominantly focused within certain industries, including construction, engineering and telecommunications. Tangible benefits of PM resulted in wide acceptance across several non-traditional sectors, especially within the last three decades. The U.S. health system comprises various stakeholders (providers, patients, insurance and pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, etc.), and offers enormous opportunities of PM applications that directly impact on quality, affordability (timeliness and costs) and efficiency. Dr. Okon presents a system-lens perspective of population health at the intersection of PM applications.

Summary:

  1. Overview of my research, technological advances and PM in research
  2. U.S. Healthcare system: What has PM got to do with it?
  3. Determinants of health: Any roles for PM applications?
  4. Health-in-all-policies: Implications and opportunities for PM
  5. Future of U.S. healthcare: Opportunities for leveraging PM to advance population health

Biography

Dr. Okon’s research aims at unraveling molecular mechanisms that instigate the pathogenesis and/or accentuation of chronic disorders, including cancer, obesity and diabetes. Mechanisms associated with altered OkonImohmetabolism or angiogenesis, for example in the context of cancer drug-resistance involve untangling complex interplay between transmembrane receptor signaling, trafficking and regulation of proangiogenic factors. The goal is to translate novel research findings into therapeutic interventions. Dr. Okon has published several peer-reviewed articles, authored a book on cancer and presented at national and international meetings.

Dr. Okon holds a Biochemistry degree, masters’ degree in medical biotechnology (University of Westminster, London) and several years’ experience within pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Okon undertook doctoral studies in Clinical Medical Research with a focus on ovarian cancer at Hammersmith Hospital campus of Imperial College London. Upon graduation, he undertook postdoctoral training at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC). During this time, Dr. Okon spent over 5-years working on several biomedical and clinical research projects, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and metabolic dysfunction. He has previously served as a consultant and program director for a health start-up company, and is a member of several professional bodies (including PMI – Atlanta chapter). As an Assistant Professor at Georgia State University, Dr. Okon leads a small but effective team of translational/clinical researchers. Additionally, he possesses Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, and MPH degree candidate with concentration in Health Management & Policy. Together, his research and project management expertise integrates system-wide population health problems with evidence-driven innovative solutions.
