PMI Atlanta is pleased to announce December’s Volunteer of the Month – congratulations, Carleton Moten!
For the past several years Carleton has served in various capacities for the Industry Forums Committee and has achieved outstanding success in each role, his most recent assignment was AVP for this committee. Carleton is a born leader and modern P.T. Barnum, a great master of advertising, promotion, communication and charisma. Under his auspices, the Industry Forums Committee footprint has grown exponentially, including event attendance, corporate sponsorships and professional engagement, as well as personally drafting many other volunteers for roles in the PMI Atlanta Chapter. This level of diligence and foresight is what spurs comments like the one below about our meritorious December VOM.
"Carleton is a POWERHOUSE! The amount of time and energy he put into building and supporting the Industry Forums is CRAZY!" - quote from a current committee VP
In his leisure time he enjoys his most relaxing activity, which is watching movies. And although he enjoys a variety of movie genre's he openly admits he's grown very fond of romantic dramas, and openly admits one of his favorites…….The Bridges of Madison County (awesome movie & book), gets him to sob every time. How can we not love, admire and appreciate a fellow volunteer who bares their soul so openly like that to our entire PMI Atlanta organization.
Carleton's PMI Atlanta philosophy sums it all up………"PMI Atlanta affords a wonderful opportunity to work with committed individuals, all of whom are stretching themselves in important ways to grow themselves, PMI Atlanta, and the profession." What an insightful and tremendous thought process that is worthy of reverberating to each member throughout our PMI Atlanta Chapter and beyond.
Read and learn more about him below and what he enjoys about volunteering for PMI Atlanta.
1. What has been your favorite or most rewarding volunteer experience with PMI Atlanta?
The most rewarding aspect is the opportunity to work with people who are engaged in an activity that is really meaningful to them.
I originally volunteered to assist the then Program Manager of the Agile Forum, next thing you know I am the Program Manager! I could not have gotten over the shock had it not been for the fine team of Rohan Crawford, Andrew Gurbaxani, Karen Powell, Donya Sabaghi, and Elizabeth White.
I am proud of the team for increasing attendance and fully subscribing all of our events with a paying corporate sponsor ... not an easy feat at the time.
2. What would you like to accomplish during your volunteer tenure?
At some point I met Teresa Durham, now one of your VPs, but in the course of our conversations I became very interested in two things:
(1) Increasing our footprint among all of the professional organizations in our market.
(2) Fully re-engaging senior Project/Program Management professionals in the effort.
3. How did you become interested in the project management profession?
I was in IT since the mid 80s and by the 00s I had gone through programming, design, Quality Management, Project Management and Functional Management. Project Management afforded the most variety of experiences. So after a decade hiatus I decided to pick-up there.
4. Are there any project management resources you find particularly helpful?
Yes, all of the textual resources available and highlighted by PMI and PMI Atlanta and most importantly being engaged with practitioners!
5. What leisurely activities do you enjoy? Any little known fact that you’d like to share?
My most relaxing activity is movies. I enjoy most genres. What is really surprising is I have grown fond of chick flicks. My very favorite is Bridges of Madison County ... I sob everytime!
6. Is there anything else you would like to share about volunteering , PMI Atlanta or your professional experience?
You're not really leading unless you're all volunteers (in spirit)!
"Seriously, PMI Atlanta affords a wonderful opportunity to work with committed individuals, all of whom are stretching themselves in important ways to grow themselves, PMI Atlanta, and the profession."
