Scrum is an Agile process that allows us to focus on delivering the highest business value in the shortest time. Scrum allows teams to rapidly and repeatedly inspect working software. The business sets the priorities; the teams self-organize to determine the best way to deliver the highest priority features.

This presentation promises to be fun and engaging as the team performs an interactive demonstration of the roles and responsibilities of an Agile Scrum team. We will attempt to draw participants in as the team presents the daily activities of a Scrum team to design and deliver a product using Agile Scrum processes:

"Creating the National Vital Statistics Modernization Community of Practice – A shared space for learning and innovation" presented by Prachi Mehta, Health Scientist (Informatics)

The National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) is the oldest and most successful example of inter-governmental data sharing in public health and the shared relationships, standards, and procedures form the mechanism by which NCHS collects and disseminates the Nation's official vital statistics. While timeliness of birth and death data has improved considerably in recent years, delays in reporting remain because of a number of factors including complexities in the data collection process, varying levels of adoption of electronic registration systems, interoperability challenges, and insufficient and inconsistent funding. The NVSS data modernization initiative aims to address these barriers by promoting strategies that strengthen the implementation and use of interoperable systems and processes across the vital records ecosystem.

Given the complexity of the vital records ecosystem comprised of diverse stakeholders from health care and public health, each working on initiatives to foster data modernization, there needs to be a forum where groups could come together and share challenges, strategies, and lessons learned. The NVSS Modernization Community of Practice (COP) was launched in the Fall of 2019 with the intent of creating such a shared space that would promote ongoing connection, learning, and innovation.

There are numerous lessons learned and promising practices that can be gleaned from our initial experience of implementing a national scale community of practice for modernizing a public health data system. This presentation will highlight successful strategies for bringing together diverse stakeholders in a virtual environment, guiding principles to consider when designing a COP, and ensuring participation is sustainable and engaging while promoting leadership from within the community.
