Leaders often pride themselves in the fact that they “treat all their team members the same”. From an anti-bias, inclusive perspective, it is important for leaders to treat all their team members fairly and consistently, but not the same. Situational Leadership theory suggests that leaders should adjust their leadership styles to accommodate the needs of individual team members. Situational leadership theory, first proposed in the 1970s by Ken Blanchard and Paul Hersey, recommends that leaders adjust the amount of direction and support they provide team members according to each member’s capabilities and confidence levels. Each team member is an individual with individual needs. This speaker will explain the 4 development levels and corresponding leadership styles proposed by Situational Leadership theory.
