PMI Atlanta Technology Forum provides an environment for Project Managers to adopt and benefit from the latest technology in their professional life and career. The forum also plans to bring speakers to discuss & share the best practices in technology.

Built Tech is what shapes the future of planning, construction, management of buildings, infrastructure and cities. The Eco system that supports the Built Environment has been slow to adopt technology due to the high degree of fragmentation. This fragmentation creates a void of innovation and technology leadership. 

KP would like to empower the Built Tech industry with helping you better understand technology and how your job is going to change in less than 5 years. Does new technology mean slimming of workforce crews? Will new technology help get materials faster to the job site?  We need Tech and we want the newest software or designs to differentiate and have advantages of competitors. KP will talk about large companies spinning out new tech companies and focus on technology and today's times. You will learn how to be prepared to deal with such changes and be equipped with what technology is coming.  KP will even touch on starts ups in our industry and the Uber of construction where you can get your materials in 2 hours or less. Some examples of Technology talked about include: BIM, Robotics, Blockchain, etc.

Lastly, KP will touch on his new endeavor called BuiltTech Labs and show how you can grow your business, network, ask analyst questions in real time, research documents at your fingertips and have the knowledge to make the right decisions for your career and company.

What does innovation mean to you?

The best definition I’ve borrowed is that innovation is about creating abundance where there was once scarcity. If you look at the shared economy, that’s a perfect example. Technology freed up excess inventory to be leveraged by others. People had extra rooms, and AirBnB was born. People had underutilized cars, and Lyft was born.

How have you seen the culture of innovation evolve in recent years?

Big companies say “innovation, let’s do do that!” But they overlook how culture weighs into their ability to successfully innovate. The first thing corporate innovation teams do is build out cool office space and tell everyone to wear t-shirts to work--but that has nothing to do with innovation. To innovate, you need a passion for solving a problem.

Why have corporations struggled to innovate?

Unfortunately, in a corporate structure, risk is viewed as a detriment. If you take a big risk and fail, you’ll get fired. If you’re successful, there’s not a huge reward. Because of the incentive structure, you’re set up for failure.

What changes need to occur for corporate innovation to be successful?

It often takes an external voice to address the structural problem of innovating within a large company. To get perspective, you have to get outside of the building.

Who’s doing corporate innovation well?

Very few organizations. Google does it well because they’ve built a culture of failure. If you take a risk and fail, you get promoted, not fired. You’re celebrated for taking action. It’s those who just sit at the back of the room who get fired. You’re not punished for trying. It’s the opposite.

"A Culture Centric Approach to Data Governance"

Many business and technology conferences highlight “culture” as a (or THE) critical factor to success. This is particularly true for data governance-focused sessions. Thought leaders advise “Data governance isn’t one-size-fits-all.” and “It’s all about culture.” Then they leave us hanging with questions: “What is culture?”; “Why is culture important to successful data governance programs?”; “How do we address culture when building or improving data governance programs?”

Through years of experience, we’ve learned that data governance is about people, behavior, and results and that an empathetic, people-focused approach was common among our best successes. Over time, we developed a culture-centric approach to data governance that weaves cultural components into standard phases of a data governance program. 

We will share key components to help you identify your core culture and provide a specific culture-centric approach for each core culture to use for a successful data governance program. Topics will include: 

  • What does “culture” mean and why is it important

  • How to identify the core culture of your company 

  • How to design and execute a new data governance program specific to your company’s culture

  • How to take a culture-centric approach in each phase of discovery, operationalizing, and sustaining data governance
