PMI Atlanta Toastmasters meeting on June 12th was packed out with a theme of “Change”. The club’s newly elected President, Dean Gudlauski, serving as Sergeant at Arms, called the meeting to order. Laura Davidson, Toastmaster of the evening, shared the importance of persevering through change daily and demonstrated this ability when she filled in as Jokemaster for the meeting. With a room full of lively visitors and members it was time for three intriguing speeches.
Kristin Howlett, the first speaker of the night delivered a speech and presentation entitled “Leadership is About Emotion”. The audience was immediately engaged, when asked to think of three people they admire. Kristin then walked the audience through many overlooked but crucial leadership skills including:
1) Emotional Intelligence – Relate to people, they will respond to this
2) Continuous Learning – Remain open to a new way of doing things
3) Contextualize - Provide a “Fresh Sight” opposed to “Group Thinking”
4) Let Go – Inspire people and trust them to do well
5) Honesty – The truth will surface
6) Kindness & Respect – This is not always easy but necessary
7) Collaboration – Partner and communicate good and bad news
The speech concluded with a request to the audience to be human and clear; remember that leadership is an art and science.
The second speaker of the night, Sam Abdelaziz delivered his 10th speech, earning his Competent Communicators certificate. In his speech entitled, “My Heroes”, Sam shared details about several of his lifelong heroes. Sam recognized many of our known heroes were produced for a special time and purpose. Many may not have existed if they lived in a different era. Sam concluded the speech by recognizing several heroes in the audience, citing their personal triumphs through adversity. The crowd was intrigued with Sam’s sincerity and passion. He was applauded on his major accomplishment!
The final speech of the evening, “Leadership by Example”, was delivered by Kevin Buchanan a natural speaking talent. Kevin shared lessons learned from both his father and stepfather that shaped him into a leader. Both men were vastly different in their background, passing on unique traits including patience, confidence, and persistence. His powerful storytelling enthralled the audience to find the leader in them.
All three evaluators, Michael Donahoe, Bill Kay and Shannon Kraiger shared thorough and constructive feedback, the best gift ever! The speakers received tips on enhancing the impact of their speech including adjusting vocal variety, focusing on the opening, and finishing strong. The speakers were also commended for their clean presentations, and captivating topics.
There were many visitors and veteran members who took part in making this meeting a success. Toastmaster’s is the perfect place to further develop, network and have tons of fun. Join us at the next meeting that will be held on June 26th from 6:30-8pm at Nancy G’s Café on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.
