PMI Atlanta is pleased to announce September’s Volunteer of the Month – congratulations, Eka Okonmkpaeto! For the past two years, Eka has served as the Lead for Technology Forums Registration. Among other reasons, she is being recognized for being a dependable lead for the industry forums and her ability to always ensure timely set up for the technology forums. We love Eka’s outlook on the project management profession – read more about it below and her beliefs about the ‘joy’ of volunteering.

Okonmkpaeto EkaQ. How did you become interested in the project management profession?
A. Oh that's simple... I saw and still see the project management profession as a field of career that never "sleeps" - it always changes and challenges people's old mind set of thinking and doing their businesses as usual. The project management profession is exciting and lively in that it breaks the walls and creates a 'culture of transparency'. It's all about connecting the dots through communication by requiring internal and external stakeholders to come together to focus on specific project objectives. As a result, effective teamwork is central to successful projects. This is why my interest in project management was aroused.

Q. What has been your favorite or most rewarding volunteer experience with PMI Atlanta?
A. I believe my favorite volunteer experience with PMI Atlanta is the opportunity to meet, see, and serve people with gladness in my heart and a smile on my face. Particularly, being part of the volunteer team for Tech Forum that sets up in the spirit of education and understanding - in that each scheduled speaker brings enlargement to our professional and/or personal awareness.

PMI Atlanta Career Month Provides A Spark to Ignite Your Job Search

July shaped up to be one of the most eventful months for PMI Atlanta. Our volunteers put together FIVE events to catapult your career to the next level.

The month started with our annual Recruiter Panel. Mike Ososki, a Communications team member, captured the night in an article here.

The Industry Forums brought two panels to you: Agile and Governance. The Agile Panel, in true form, used Lean Coffee and Agile techniques to conduct the discussion. Lakisia Jones, an Agile Forum team member, summarizes the insight in an article here. The Governance Forum offered a panel discussing Careers in Project Management. This group of seasoned PMs, including 2 PMI Atlanta Past Presidents, gave their career experiences in a more intimate session.

Next, our teams offered Advanced LinkedIn Training with Dana Maggi, VP, Sr. Career Consultant at Lee Hecht Harrison, which included an opportunity to network with recruiters and peers. Dana brought a wealth of knowledge on how to increase your network and effectively market yourself by tweaking just a few settings and habits.

The month's finale was Speed Dating with Recruiters. This highly-requested event returned with many opportunities to make connections with the recruiter booths, find answers at the informal recruiter panel, and have one-on-one discussions during the namesake Speed Dating with Recruiters sessions, each lasting about 30 minutes each.

We have heard 7 people were placed in jobs last year. After the showing from recruiters, members, and guests, we anxiously await hearing the impact from this year’s energized participants.  If you have an experience you would like to share, please be sure to share it in our survey.

Congratulations, Nancy Berlin! Nancy has been selected as our August Volunteer of the Month. She has volunteered with PMI Atlanta for several years, lending her talent and time to nearly every aspect of planning for the chapter. Nancy currently serves as chair of the Technology forum where she works with a group of enthusiastic professionals looking to discover new innovative ways to further the PMI Atlanta Chapter.

You’d think leading our forums would keep Nancy plenty busy, but she also enjoys outdoor activities like gardening, tennis and walks on the beach as well as serving the Kiwanis club, Children’s Sunday School and Habitat for Humanity. We love Nancy’s passion and vision! Read on to learn more about Nancy, her thoughts about the chapter entering the digital marketing arena and vision for establishing PMI Atlanta as a nationally recognized chapter.

Q. What has been your favorite or most rewarding volunteer experience with PMI Atlanta?
A. There have been so many rewarding experiences over the past few years as I think I’ve touched on just about all aspects of the PMI Atlanta Chapter. But, I think the most rewarding is working with the Forums. It’s a great group of enthusiastic, passionate leaders and we are always thinking of new innovative things that can be done to further PMI Atlanta. We’ve taken the Forums to a new level and under excellent leadership, I think you’ll see even more innovation.

Q. What would you like to accomplish during your volunteer tenure?

A. I’m not sure my volunteering will ever end…LOL. I think I’ll always at least be part of the Forums. But, I would like to do what I can to help the Leadership of PMI Atlanta make our Chapter known, not just in Atlanta, but known as a leader in other PMI Chapters. I’m very passionate about leadership and teamwork and enabling them to give back to the community to sustain that growth within and for others.

Recruiters Offer Sage Career Advice at July Dinner Meeting

by Mike Ososki, PMP, Communications Committee

Again this year, it is the highest Dunwoody Dinner attendance. Why? Because everyone’s favorite radio station is WII-FM: What’s In It For Me? We can’t help it—when you ponder everything that depends on your job/career, it’s no wonder you prioritize to play the hiring game as well as you can. Hiring managers ask the same question... what can you do for me?

This time, the professional recruiters who generously shared their wide and deep views, learned opinions, diverse and sometimes contrasting advice with us were...

• Geri Baldwin Gonzales – Sr. Director of Recruiting, RGP
• Stephanie Duncan – Director of Recruiting, Crawford & Company
• Cyndy Gay – Recruiter, TrueBridge Resources
• Josh Murphy – Sr. Technical Recruiter, Staffing Technologies
• Paul Noetling – Recruiter, MATRIX Resources
• Michael W. Patrick – Sr. Talent Acquisition Partner, Fiserv

The good news is the general consensus that demand for Project Management expertise continues to increase. Paul describes it as an uptick, while Michael states “a large need,” both for direct-hire and contract/consult arrangements. “The market is up,” according to Josh, and “with the right skill mix and good timing, the best time to find a job is when you have one.”
