The I-85 Express Lanes project was the first dynamically priced, demand-management strategy in Georgia and the first all-registered, dynamically priced and HOV2+ to HOT3+ conversion project in the country. Though tolling is relatively new for Metro Atlanta, with only one fixed-rate toll road prior to the I-85 Express Lanes, this project has paved the way for future toll roads to be constructed in the region within the next five years. State DOT leaders have approved a Managed Lanes System Plan that includes opening an extended I-85 Express Lanes facility just north of the current facility and adding two additional reversible toll facilities on I-75 South and North.
